My first book review -- a student's review

okay, my first review is the book I am reading now from the library: yes this is a very enjoyable book because two girls called Rorie and Elsie's  parents are inventors, who have this new system that scan put or change your  clothes by a computer, but when they discover their parents disappeared  after school they are desperate to find where their parents are. Mr Harris and his wife have to look after the two girls at their strict school while ht e police are on the look out for the two girls parents. yes this is a very dramatic story which draws the reader in as every time I have to close the book I feel and urge of mystery wanting me to open the book again!!! this book is amazing and I definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and detective stories.

Why I like reading by a Year 7 student

I really enjoy reading as it always feels like I'm there. Reading really boasts my imagination and I always imagine the story in my head. I also really enjoy reading as every story is completely different and I never know what to expect. When I read I feel in a different world. A book always gives me lots of good ideas of how I should write stories and all of the different styles. I really enjoy to read all different books and I like to see how every book I read is different!

A student review of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory'

I reads a book called Charlie and the chocolate factory which was about a boy who had very little money and he lived near the factory. There were five golden tickets that willy wonka had put in ordinary chocolate bars from his company. The first was found by Ogustas  Gloop the next verruca salt the next was Violet Beauregarde the next Mike teavee. Charlie then found the last one from a note he found on the floor and he bought one ate all of it then bought another and there sitting under the packaging was the golden ticket. They all went in and Ocustas Gloop was the first to be kicked out of the group from a stupid mistake. The next was Violet who turned fat and blue looking like a blueberry. Then it was verruca who got pushed into a hole of rubbish by squirrels then mike turned into a tiny person and was stretched. Charlie was the last one and won the prize which was the factory then he was taken to his home by a glass elevator they picked up his family and went back to live at the factory for the rest of there lives.

 

I liked this book because it was interesting how a child’s life from being very poor then flips to being the richest child in the world owning the biggest factory in the world.

A Year 7 student's review of Planet Janet

         The book that I am reading is called Planet Janet and it is about a girl that has decided that she is going to join the dark side. It is written like a diary. She doesn't like her family that much because they always fight and she doesn't like her big brother. I think it is going to be a very good story and I cant wait to carry on reading it.                   Also on your website it didn't work so I'm just going to just tell you now. I like reading because when I read I feel like I go to a different place. Also when I read a funny book it makes me feel happy. When I read an adventure book I feel like I'm actually there with the characters, in the adventure! I also like reading because If I'm stressing out I read and then I feel normal again.                                                 

What do Year 9 like reading?

I had really interesting lesson with Year 9 talking about their reading. Many students are predicted high grades from their Key Stage 2 SATS but are not doing so well at the moment because they’ve lost interest in reading. The aim of the library lessons is to get them re-engaged with reading.

I explained that people who get high grades, the As and A*s, really are big readers, they think outside the box, they bring a wealth of experience and outside interests to their work. They largely do this by being keen readers: they’ve developed great skills in understanding texts, a wide vocabulary and a curiosity and wonder about the world.

This blog is aimed at getting teenagers like this reading!

About half the students said that they don’t like reading, with a few saying they are still enthusiastic. One student said she had read a lot of Harry Potter, but then stopped.

Many girls wanted to find books about love, while some girls wanted to read about crime and adventure.

I have now asked my class to respond this post by saying what they like reading and why. My new e-Book, Star-crossed — Romeo and Juliet for Teenagers, might be start??

Review: The Secret Scripture - Chapter 1 to Chapter 5

 Personally I have found this book very suspenseful and dramatic; the focus is about the mysteries and queries of the past and how they can be the answers to future. The reader is first introduced to an elderly Irish woman called Roseanne. She is living in the ruins of a derelict mental hospital, Roscommon Regional Mental Hospital set in modern day. The hospital, because of it's condition, is scheduled for closure therefore each patient is being assessed to see whether they should be transferred or 'let back into the community'. Roseanne is around 100 years old and has lived in the institution from a young age and therefore is reluctant to leave. Although, she does not consider the place to be her home, she is fragile and has nobody to care for her. She has decided to write her story onto an unwanted piece of paper. The paper  symbolises what she is to society, unwanted. Her vulnerability and difficulty is a recurring motif in the story.\\ Meanwhile, the book is also written from the perspective of the senior psychiatrist Dr Grene. He is finding it hard to assess his patients' health and send them away. He admits he is a bit 'maternal' towards them. The hardest patient he is trying to evaluate is Roseanne. To him she represents the place. He is also having marriage problems with his wife Bet. \\ The next chapter alternates back to Roseanne, where she reveals some the details of her origins. She explains that she was brought up in Sligo, near the borders of Northern Ireland. Her father was the caretaker of the grave yard and her mother was 'the most beautiful woman in Sligo', a former chamber maid in a Southampton boarding house. As the civil war of Ireland begins, it is evident that trouble is foreshadowed for Roseanne's family. With this each family member is affected.\\ In my opinion this book is deep and very symbolic that gives the book a very interesting style. At first I thought the book was a bit over-thought and exaggerated however slowly the plot has been building and subtly joining together making the story very gripping to read.

The Magician Nephew -- A student's favourite book

A Year 7 student writes:
"my favourite book over the summer was the magicians nephew chronicles of Narnia. I loved the description and detail in the book, I could imagine every single word in my head. My favourite part was when Aslan was creating Narnia and with one word the trees would come alive, with one whisper the birds would breath again. I would definitely recommend this book to all people who  like to read adventurous and quest stories. I think the moral of the story is that don't be afraid of the unseen. I found it really hard to take my head out of the book as when ever I had to go there would always be a cliff-hanger dragging me closer to the book and  reading on to find out more to the story."
